Ego Defense Mechanisms

/ego-defense-mechanisms/
Unconscious psychological strategies employed by the ego to protect against anxiety, emotional conflict, and threats to self-esteem by distorting reality or redirecting uncomfortable thoughts and feelings. These mechanisms serve adaptive functions but can become problematic when overused or rigidly applied.
Example: Using rationalization to explain away a job rejection ("I didn't really want that position anyway") or projection (attributing one's own angry feelings to others).
