Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

/electroconvulsive-therapy-ect/
A medical treatment for severe depression and other mental disorders involving the controlled induction of brief seizures through electrical stimulation of the brain under general anesthesia. Modern ECT is highly effective for treatment-resistant depression and is much safer than historical versions.
Example: A patient with severe, medication-resistant depression receives ECT treatments over several weeks, resulting in significant improvement in mood and functioning when other treatments have failed.
