In Bruner's theory of cognitive development, the first mode of representing knowledge through motor responses and physical actions. This hands-on learning precedes iconic (visual) and symbolic (abstract) representation, forming the foundation for conceptual understanding.
Example: A young child learning about "heavy" and "light" by physically lifting different objects before understanding the visual or verbal concepts of weight.
