Equilibrium

/equilibrium/
In Piaget's theory, a state of cognitive balance achieved when existing mental schemas adequately explain and predict environmental experiences. Disequilibrium occurs when schemas are challenged, motivating accommodation and cognitive development.
Example: A child's understanding of animals is in equilibrium until encountering a platypus, which challenges their mammal schema and requires cognitive restructuring.
