In research ethics, the state of genuine uncertainty about the relative benefits and risks of different treatments, necessary for ethically conducting randomized controlled trials where participants are assigned to different treatment conditions.
Example: A clinical trial comparing two depression treatments can only be ethical if researchers genuinely don't know which treatment is superior before conducting the study.
