Escape Learning

A type of operant conditioning where behavior is reinforced by the removal or avoidance of an aversive stimulus, strengthening responses that lead to relief from unpleasant situations. This learning mechanism is fundamental to understanding avoidance behaviors and anxiety disorders.
Example: A rat learns to press a lever to turn off electric shock, or a student learns to complete homework to avoid teacher criticism and parental consequences.
