Executive Function

A set of higher-order cognitive processes including working memory, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control that enable goal-directed behavior, problem-solving, and self-regulation. These "mental skills" develop throughout childhood and can be impaired by various neurological and psychological conditions.
Example: Planning a research project involves working memory to hold multiple requirements in mind, flexibility to adjust when obstacles arise, and inhibition to resist distracting activities.
