Extinction Burst

A temporary increase in the frequency, intensity, or variability of a behavior when reinforcement is first withdrawn, occurring before the behavior begins to decrease. This phenomenon is important for understanding behavior modification and therapy progress.
Example: A child's tantrums becoming more intense and frequent when parents first stop giving attention to this behavior, before the tantrums eventually decrease.
