Extinction

/extinction/
In learning theory, the gradual weakening and eventual disappearance of a conditioned response when the conditioned stimulus is repeatedly presented without the unconditioned stimulus, or when a behavior is no longer reinforced. This process is fundamental to behavior modification and therapeutic interventions.
Example: A dog gradually stops salivating to a bell if the bell is repeatedly rung without food being presented, or a child's tantrums decrease when parents consistently ignore them.
