The physiological and behavioral reaction to perceived threats, involving activation of the sympathetic nervous system, release of stress hormones, and preparation for fight, flight, or freeze responses.
Example: The immediate reaction to seeing a spider, including increased heart rate, muscle tension, attention focusing, and either approaching, avoiding, or freezing, depending on the threat assessment.
