Neural mechanisms where increased activity in a circuit leads to activation of inhibitory processes that reduce or modulate the original activity, maintaining balance and preventing overactivation.
Example: Inhibitory interneurons in the brain that activate when excitatory neurons fire too frequently, preventing seizures and maintaining optimal neural activity levels.
