The perceptual ability to distinguish objects (figures) from their backgrounds (ground), a fundamental aspect of visual organization that can be disrupted in certain neurological and psychological conditions.
Example: Seeing a white vase against a black background, or alternatively seeing two black faces in profile, demonstrating how the same visual information can be organized into different figure-ground relationships.
