Forward Masking

A perceptual phenomenon where a preceding stimulus (mask) interferes with the perception of a subsequent target stimulus, used to study unconscious processing and temporal aspects of perception.
Example: Briefly presenting a pattern before a target image, making the target harder to perceive and allowing researchers to study unconscious visual processing.
