The tendency to overestimate both the intensity and duration of future emotional states, particularly overestimating how long positive or negative events will affect mood.
Example: Expecting that getting a promotion will make you happy for months when the boost actually lasts only weeks, or thinking a breakup will cause lasting devastation.
